Gabinete Caligari Essentials
Apple Music
Gabinete Caligari took their name from a German expressionist film from the ‘20s, but the trio's own arty, melodic pop-rock is far more colourful. At the centre of the band, part of the "movida madrileña" of the '80s, is talented Jaime Urrutia, whose songs reflect Spain's newly liberated spirit following the death of Franco. With his exceptionally theatrical voice, Urrutia slyly reappraised Spanish culture—from bullfighting to the tarantella, or "spider dance"—all peppered with references to The Beatles, Roxy Music and even American country-rock.
