Born and raised in Mexico, singer/songwriter Ely Guerra came of age in the era of zines and 7-inches. A stint at Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, exposed her to that city's exploding indie music and art scene and, in 1992, not long after she returned home, the emergent alt-rocker signed a deal and released her eponymous debut. Since then, Guerra has experimented with both genre (dub, bossa nova, trip-hop) and persona (at one point, the ardent feminist shaved her head to protest being objectified), but her songs have retained their fiery passion and emotional clarity.
