Electroclash Essentials

At the turn of the 21st century, electroclash brought irony and anarchism to the dance floor with R-rated come-ons and unrelenting beats. This short-lived but highly influential movement helped shape what the best and most outrageous of alt-dance and EDM would eventually become, a neon-lined amalgam of disparate influences meant for pure and sweaty release. Its DIY mentality came wrapped in an anti-commercial appeal that drew from ‘80s synth-pop, techno, and punk. The brasher and bawdier the better, as Peaches, Fischerspooner, and electroclash’s other major players have proven.
