Editors’ Notes Although Jan Garbarek hesitates to describe his music as “jazz,” the influence of Coltrane and Ayler can still be felt in the cry of the Norwegian's saxophones. There is a concentrated emotional intensity in Garbarek's sound, and his resourcefulness as an improviser is documented on many albums—with his own groups and with Keith Jarrett's “Belonging” band, as well as the beyond-category “Officium” collaboration with the Hilliard Ensemble.
