Durand Bernarr: Chosen Family

For week two of Apple’s 2021 Black History Month celebration, we’re celebrating the chosen family, a concept where individuals have established the kind of bonds we typically associate with blood relatives, only with a community of individuals sharing experience, perspective, and, in many cases, passion. Los Angeles-via-Cleveland singer-songwriter Durand Bernarr knows this bond well. “I think about how people will say, ‘Well, I accept you,’ as if that's a grand gesture,” Bernarr told Ebro Darden during an episode of Apple Music’s The Message. “I would rather be embraced. My family that I've chosen has embraced me and they encourage me and uplift me. Relatives, we share the same blood, and I ain't got nothing to do with that. But when you have people that are your family, that is people that have sown into you in a way that it's like it's beyond tangible.” Bernarr’s Black History Month playlist—which includes two selections from his acclaimed 2020 Dur& project alongside standouts from Thundercat, Erykah Badu, and Busta Rhymes—is stocked with both peers and inspirations, playing most simply as a collection of music to enjoy while spending time around loved ones. If you hear something you like, be sure to save it to your library.
