A staple of Johannesburg clubs, Lutendo Kungoane—a.k.a. DJ Sliqe—has carved a distinct path in South African hip-hop. His debut LP Injayam, Vol. 1 (2016), an ingenious cocktail of rap and kwaito, included self-assured smash “Do Like I Do” featuring Kwesta and Flabba. A loaded remix of the song also made Sliqe the first hip-hop DJ to win a prestigious SAMA gong. In 2019, Injayam, Vol. 2 proved the beatmaker has his finger on the pulse of the rap scene with earworms like “Please”, which pairs the inimitable Frank Casino with rising star Flame over his softly skittering rhythms.
