Singer-songwriter Des’ree became R&B royalty after her indelible self-affirmation anthem “You Gotta Be” caught fire internationally. Her sensuous piano ballad “Kissing You” was a stand-out moment in the 1996 film William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet; the wonder-filled “Life” became a radio earworm two years later.
