With a nod to ’90s hip hop, Dengaryu straddles jazz rap and the heavy kickdrums of gangsta, but astutely refreshes them with modern impulses. “Ramen” combines folk string samples with the classic swing of New York boom bap, and “Lonely” employs nu-metal style echoed backing vocals and abrasive drums to intensely convey his social alienation.
