Dave Mason Essentials

Dave Mason’s wide-ranging career began with the British psych-rock band Traffic—he wrote and sang the band’s iconic “Feelin’ Alright?” and sprawled as he became an in-demand session musician through the ’60s and ’70s for artists from Jimi Hendrix to George Harrison to The Rolling Stones. Simultaneously, the guitarist and singer-songwriter was prolific as a soloist, perhaps best known for his 1977 hit “We Just Disagree,” which reached No. 12 on the Hot 100 and was eventually covered live by Bob Dylan. Translating his songwriting skill to fit the soft rock trends of the moment, Mason released a slew of successful singles in the ’70s, from a slightly mellowed-out take on The Shirelles’ “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” to the breezy “Let It Go, Let It Flow” to the upbeat “Only You Know and I Know.” Mason returned Bob Dylan’s favor by recording a jam-heavy version of his “All Along the Watchtower” and had a late-career blues renaissance with an assist from Joe Bonamassa on “Use It, or Lose It.”
