Coeur de Pirate Essentials

When she released her self-titled debut at the age of 18, Béatrice Martin, a.k.a. Coeur de pirate, came across as a timid ingénue with big tattoos and a fluted voice. But even a cursory listen revealed an impressive songwriter who didn't need much more than a piano to conquer hearts and minds. She became a star in Québec, then conquered the French, winning a prestigious Victoire award for the song "Comme des enfants," which, thanks to a viral video, became an international hit. Her followup, the poppy Blonde, marked a change of pace for Martin, who channeled '60s icons like Françoise Hardy. She can also switch to English without batting an eye, as she proved with the mariachi-infused Armistice, a duo which featured then-boyfriend Jay Malinowski, and with an impressive set of covers recorded for the popular Québec series Trauma.
