Cibo Matto Essentials

New York-grown Cibo Matto represent their adopted city well: Formed by Japanese expats Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori in 1994, the avant-pop group stirs up an intoxicating melting pot of sounds and samples. With an Italian name (Cibo Matto means “Crazy Food”), they celebrate the sweet life via woozy trip-hop (“Sugar Water”), transform a bossa nova standard (“Aguas de Marco”) and craft heady bricolages of sound that incorporate French-inflected indie rock, noisy hip-hop and smooth lounge-pop. They’ve even recruited an impressive roster of musicians to join in on the fun, including Sean Lennon, an official member for 1999’s Stereotype A.
