She released her debut album (2010’s Soluk) aged 29, but Ertem’s music career began long before then. Growing up, she was in a children’s choir, then moved to Istanbul as a teen to study Western Music for two years. That cultured musicality shines through the singer-songwriter’s work. “Esmer” is a gentle ballad balancing furtive saxophone, easy-going guitar and a quivering vocal. “Efsunlu Dünya” is more esoteric, with arrhythmic percussion and flutes creating an ethereal ambience. She does tempestuous, too, as on jazzy “Beni Öyle Bilme”, where she lowers her voice to accompany a timid piano.
