Drumming doyen Buddy Rich became legendary for leading his big band through hard-swinging jazz burners, but he always kept a couple of surprises up his sleeve as well. Rich was anything but a rocker, but that didn't stop him from diving into a jazzed-up take on The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood," and he would even hop on vocal duties occasionally, delivering creamy crooners à la his pal Mel Tormé on beautiful ballads like "Cathy."
