Bonnie Tyler was the Welsh singer who took the world by storm in 1983 with one of the great pop ballads: “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Vocal-node surgery in 1977 had given her a distinctive raspy voice, and with her pristine articulation and arch, Dolly Parton-esque timbre, she had her first taste of success with the country-pop hit “It’s a Heartache” later that year. The comeback smash “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was followed by the Footloose anthem “Holding Out for a Hero” a year later, and she continued to release vital, bluesy tracks like “Hold On” into the 21st century. Tyler passed away in July 2026 at age 75.
