Acting out his role as conductor, drummer, and bandleader in a primal rite, Art Blakey kept time with his perpetually fizzing ride cymbal on some of the sharpest hard bop of the ‘50s, making way for African chants and pounding percussion in the ‘60s and beyond. Leading by example, his unforgiving rhythm drove his players to reach for ever-greater heights, or risk getting left behind.
