Though rooted in folk-rock tradition, Blitzen Trapper delight in stretching their sound into uncharted territory. “Below the Hurricane” may begin as an acoustic serenade, but it acquires a taut backbeat that leads us into a fog of hazy harmonicas and organ drones. Even when honoring their heroes, they put their own stamp on the material—like a cover of Dylan's “Unbelievable” that reduces the bluesy romp to a lo-tech, synth-tweaked squeak.
