Billie Holiday will forever be the queen of slow-burn jazz singing, but here she stretches and impresses within that spine-tingling realm. Her luxurious drawl swaggers against bright brass bleats on “Baby Get Lost,” while elsewhere she can be perfectly poised (“I'll Look Around”) or rough-hewn and jaunty (“Me, Myself and I”). But the biggest surprise is her raw rehearsal take on the longing “A Yiddishe Momme.”
