Big Wreck were leading lights of the ’90s CanRock explosion, thanks to an arena-sized sound that tapped into the earthier, melodic side of grunge greats like Soundgarden. Showcasing Ian Thornley’s guitar-god chops and soulful pipes, the quartet’s 1997 debut, In Loving Memory Of..., yielded the alt-rock anthem “That Song” and the soaring power ballad “Blown Wide Open”. After disbanding in 2002, Big Wreck returned to active duty with 2011’s Zeppelin-esque comeback “Albatross”, and though guitarist Brian Doherty passed away prior to 2019’s ...but for the sun, the band has soldiered on as a trio, sounding as muscular as ever on “Locomotive”.
