Betty Carter took scat singing further than any other jazz vocalist in a variety of ways. Her wordless spontaneity pilots the big bands that back her in "Remember" and "The Blue Bird of Happiness," but she was equally inventive in the small-group, slow-tempo context of "Look What I Got." "B's Blues," from 1993, finds her developing fresh ideas with arguably her finest rhythm section.
