This vast, diverse nation is a seething hotbed of musical innovation. Many are familiar with its music through Fela Kuti's explosive Afrobeat recordings, but the country also had a thriving highlife scene and produced some of the greatest rock and funk bands ever to come out of Africa. Musicians based in and around Lagos in the southwest produced thousands of jùjú and apala records starting in the ‘60s, and over the years others wholeheartedly embraced disco, ‘80s funk, and sleek, modern pop.
