Named for its homebase in “Motor City” Detroit, Motown Records molded the sound of American soul in the ‘60 and ‘70s with groups like The Four Tops, The Supremes, and Marvin Gaye. Motown songs relied on the genius songcraft of studio band The Funk Brothers, whose emphasis on melodic bass guitar, tambourine-accented backbeats, and call-and-response arrangements would define the “Motown Sound.”
