As the jazz sounds of the ‘30s grew bigger, so did the ensembles that performed them. By the ‘40s, the big-band sound was sweeping the world. With less emphasis on improv and more focus on meticulously tight arrangements, big bands brought the explosive dynamism of swing to the fore, and provided a much-needed escape for both soldiers and civilians during World War II.
