Largely flying under the radar of major-label A&R departments, indie music in the '80s was allowed to flower in new and unexpected directions. Sounds as varied as the spunky folk-punk of The Pogues and Billy Bragg, the feedback and aggression of Mudhoney and Nirvana, and the crystalline shimmer of Cocteau Twins and The Church all fit comfortably under the indie banner.
