The '40s were formative years for bluegrass, before the style even had a name. Giants like Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, and Flatt & Scruggs laid the foundation, but others made major contributions too, from banjo players such as Wade Mainer and Snuffy Jenkins to flat-top guitar innovator Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith and Carl Story, the father of bluegrass gospel.
