Ben Webster and his tenor sax had one of the warmest and most affectionate tones in jazz, but he also had a dark side—that's why his nickname was “The Brute.” His relentless dexterity and incredibly controlled growls (“The Kid and the Brute”) made him one of the most original players of his time, and his grasp and manipulation of quick rhythms was spectacular (“The Iron Man”).
