Becca Hatch: Influences

Raised in Campbelltown by her Samoan mother and Kamilaroi father, Becca Hatch can hear elements of her heritage in her music. “My Polynesian side kind of helps me be a bit more self-reflective,” she tells Apple Music, “and I know that Indigenous people are storytellers, and that helps me tell stories in my songs.” She’s also inspired by R&B and hip-hop acts such as Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and Frank Ocean—sounds she channels through her songs, which range from soulful R&B to upbeat party tracks. Explore her handpicked Influences playlist here, and read on for more about her favorite tunes. Frank Ocean, “Super Rich Kids” “I fell in love with Frank and Channel ORANGE when I was about 12 and my brother put the project on my iPod. Personally one of the most influential artists and albums—alongside Blonde—in my life.” Teedra Moses & KAYTRANADA, “Be Your Girl” “This was the first time I started falling in love with dance and house music. Another really influential track and artist for me.” Alicia Keys, “If I Ain’t Got You” “When I was younger, this was the song I would practice every week with my vocal coach to train. We started in a way lower key and would keep working our way up, so thanks, Alicia, for helping with my range.” Beyoncé, “Party” “Queen B. The Blueprint. Period.” TLC, “No Scrubs” “This track just reminds me of driving around with my best friends and singing about the guys who ain’t it. Such a throwback.”
