At Home With Omar Apollo: The Playlist

Omar Apollo needed to go back to Indiana to be with his family after the release of his latest album Apolonio. “I always go home just because releasing music is so stressful,” Apollo tells Apple Music. “I just need to get centered and feel like myself again, especially after not being able to tour. Being at home, it’s just like, ‘I need to go on a bike ride with my dad.’” In his interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the Mexican American singer-songwriter also talks about becoming more comfortable in the public eye as he grows up, crafting his own brand of hot sauce, and dreaming of collaborating with Daft Punk. He’s also been making lots of playlists for every occasion, whether he’s finding the right tracks to swim to or curating this exclusive Apple Music playlist. Listening to music from Thundercat and slowthai is doing its part to soothe him during this necessary period of self-reflection; both are featured here, as is young regional Mexican singer Esteban Gabriel’s “Bajo Efecto del Alcohol.” “My cousin showed me this, and it’s so fire,” he says. “I just relate to music like corridos; it feels so nostalgic to me. I grew up listening to this music, and it makes me feel like I'm at home or I'm in Indiana driving around running errands.”
