Editors’ Notes Dean Lewis released his debut album in early 2019 and has found his pandemic silver lining: extra time to work on his follow-up. “For most artists, their first album is where they have the most time to write,” the Australian singer-songwriter tells Apple Music. “Quarantine has meant that I have had even more downtime to write and record. It’s been weird being disconnected from family and friends and people in general. But it’s meant that I can focus fully on recording new music.” Alongside writing his own songs, Lewis has been listening to plenty of intimate, thought-provoking, soothing songs throughout this period. Below, he talks more about three of his favorites.

Jon Bellion, “Stupid Deep”
“When I heard the opening line of this song, it blew me away. It was some of the most honest songwriting I’ve ever heard and it was done in such an incredibly simple way. A perfect song, during this time, in which to get introspective.”

Benjamin Francis Leftwich, “Box of Stones”
“‘Box of Stones’ is the perfect relaxation song during these quiet times being stuck inside. When I first heard it, I was inspired and it showed me how simple a song could be and still carry emotion.”

Sleeping at Last, “Saturn”
“This is such a cool song structure. Starting with strings and building into a vocal. ‘How beautiful it is to even exist’ is the most beautiful line I’ve ever heard in a song. Incredible songwriting! Great song to listen to and think about!”
