Editors’ Notes Antônio Carlos Jobim—affectionately known as "Tom" to all—is so beloved in his native Brazil that the country's largest airport is named after him. An early adopter of the fusion of samba and modern jazz, Jobim helped create bossa nova in the '50s, and went on to write many of the style's most beloved songs. Even after North American ardor for the genre cooled in the late '60s, he maintained a high profile with classic solo albums such as '70's Tide, as well as collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Elis Regina.
