Amythyst Kiah Essentials

Amythyst Kiah belongs to a generation of artists reclaiming the Black roots of American folk music. The singer, guitarist, and banjoist graduated from East Tennessee State University’s old-time and bluegrass program before releasing Dig in 2013. Kiah’s artist profile blew up when she joined Rhiannon Giddens, Allison Russell, and Leyla McCalla in the banjo supergroup Our Native Daughters, whose 2019 debut featured her Black LGBTQ+ anthem “Black Myself.” While Kiah’s commitment to traditional music remains unwavering, the indie-blues confessionals unveiled on 2021’s Wary + Strange could only come from an artist boldly addressing contemporary politics and injustices.
