Amy Lee: Visionary Women
“There’s so much new music by so many fascinating artists to celebrate for International Women’s Day, but I couldn’t help but toss in a couple of key throwbacks,” Amy Lee tells Apple Music. Among the Evanescence frontwoman’s selections are classic songs from Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, and Annie Lennox, as well as “Silent All These Years” by Tori Amos. “That song, along with all of [Amos’ album] Little Earthquakes, was an anthem for me and so many girls growing up in the ’90s feeling misunderstood and alone in my thoughts,” Lee says. “Her lyrics sounded so much like the voice in my head.” Also included is “Heavy Balloon” from Fiona Apple’s recent masterpiece Fetch the Bolt Cutters. “It’s inspiring and interesting to me in all its raw and homemade glory,” Lee says. “I love hearing household noises turned into music—the unfiltered sound of expression.”
