2020-07 Part 3

Sault has put out 3 great albums in less than a year. Til Tuesday 80’s Aimee Mann slaps. Hadn’t heard this (very popular canon) Caetano song in a while and it is as joyous as I remembered. Cat Power tribute to Cassius is very sweet, always nice to hear her quiet down an upbeat pop song when she does cover tunes. Silkworm one of my favorite underrated indie rock bands. Nonsensical Pavement lyrics but this song always gets to me because I love trains and waiting for them. Jimmie Rodgers is the only artist I listen to for the yodels—odd to hear so few on this track but I like it. The same sessions (American Epic) have Nas doing a 1920s version of “One Mic” with Jack White. Sport Murphy song a random radio find. 90s vibes. Antonioni is a Seattle band I enjoy from a Seattle label I like (Den Tapes). Kirk Knight song has A+ Noname, Thundercat features. Artifacts album has been fun to revisit, production is timeless. I just finished an amazing book about A Tribe Called Quest from one of my favorite writers (Hanif Abdurraquib) so have been re-listening to them a lot. “Beggin” is a Four Seasons song. Finding INTL versions of these old songs is a treat. “Hey Young World” originally a Slick Rick song, had always enjoyed this updated take on it from Fashawn (from a 2009 album that has many other good songs) but the Macy Gray Pt 2 was new to me when I recently heard it on the radio. “License to Kill” one of my favorites from a week long 80’s Bob Dylan binge. Infidels & Oh Mercy are both underappreciated Bob albums IMO. “Fistful of Love” still one of my favorite songs ever—very strange to think of listening to it in 2004(!). lou reed featured & uncredited. not sure there was really anything like it & I don’t remember many other visible trans artists breaking through the indie BS back then.
