About Wai Lana

A yoga icon and singer, Wai Lana is known for her many instruction videos, as well as her atmospheric, uplifting new age music. A popular TV host since the 1980s, Lana built a yoga empire, releasing DVDs, books, and albums, including 1998's Yoga Music of the Heart, 2012's Wai Lana's Little Yogis Fun Song, and the 2020 pop album Songs for the Soul. Born Hui Lan Zhang in 1955 in Hong Kong, Wai Lana became interested in yoga and meditation in her twenties after meeting noted spiritual teacher Chris Butler, aka Jagad Guru Siddhaswarupananda Paramahamsa or Siddha. Following a period living and studying in India, she returned to China, where she launched her popular Yoga TV show. The program ran from 1985 to 2000 and led to several offshoot series in Europe, as well as a PBS show in the United States. She and Butler eventually married, moving to Hawaii. There, Lana expanded her business, releasing numerous yoga and meditation instruction videos, as well as other lifestyle products, including books, cuisine, and workout kits. She also began releasing music, debuting in 1998 with the first of her offerings, Yoga Sound and Yoga Music of the Heart. A children's album, Wai Lana's Little Yogis Fun Songs, arrived in 2010. In 2016, Lana was honored with India's Padma Shri award for her achievements in popularizing yoga globally. She returned to music in 2020 with Songs for the Soul, a more pop-oriented album that featured her lyrical and positive-minded songs. ~ Matt Collar
