About Tye Newton

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Long family car rides, gazing out the window, inventing vocal harmonies to 90s folk records my parents played. Also falling asleep to my dad’s guitar-only cover of Blackbird; learning there were words many years later was a wild blast of nostalgia. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? As Tall As Lions, As Tall as Lions Elbow, The Seldom Seen Kid Incubus, Morning View Incubus was the most formative inspiration for my alt-rock foundation. Elbow’s musical range and authenticity is so relatable, like a real life soundtrack. As Tall As Lions’ Dec. 2010 farewell tour poster on my home-studio wall still breaks my heart. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “The Future Isn't What It Used to Be” My debut album’s title track summarizes its story, in a sense. I love cross-referential lyrics, weaving songs into a larger plot, which there’s plenty of on this record. The production also stayed closest to my fundamental acoustic guitar and voice. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? An enduring memory with my old band mates was winning our university’s live music competition twice, and opening for some world-class acts on campus. It was very "big fish, small pond," yet an important validation for our young band at the time. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? My solo career took over a decade to begin, in part due to a voice condition I had to relearn my way around. With so much catching up to do, my coming debut album represents roughly a third of the backlogged music I’m actively producing for release.
