About Triston Palma

b. 1962, Waltham Park, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Palma is widely acknowledged as being introduced to the recording scene by DJ and producer Jah Thomas. He was hailed as a master of the sing-jay style that enjoyed enormous popularity in the early 80s. In 1980, prior to his alliance with Jah Thomas, the She Get Up And Skank label released ‘Bad Boys’, which accelerated his career. He recorded ‘A Class Girl’, credited to Triston And Tony, which inspired Thomas to work with Palma. His initial hits, ‘Entertainment’ and ‘Spliff Tail’, made a significant impression with the reggae audience. He also recorded in combination with Ranking Toyan ‘Run Around Woman’, and with Badoo ‘Yes I’m Ready’. Palma’s initial success led to a large number of recordings, including ‘Raving’ and ‘Joker Smoker’, which were both in combination with Thomas. In 1982, Palma was still topping the reggae charts with ‘Darling When’, ‘If You Knew Baby’ and ‘Rub A Dub Session’. By the end of the year Thomas began concentrating on Michael Palmer’s career as he felt that his association with Palma had reached its pinnacle. In 1983 Palma had a succession of hits including ‘Mr False Preacher’ with Nicker Smart, ‘Settle Down Girl’, ‘I’m Leaving’ with Ranking Joe, ‘Woman Woman’, ‘Undying Love’, ‘Buy Out The Bar’, ‘No Shot No Fire’, ‘Folly Ranking’ and ‘It’s Not What You Say’. By 1985 Palma became involved in the Music Is Life project, alongside a host of top performers, including Freddie McGregor, Mutabaruka, Gregory Isaacs, Third World, Edi Fitzroy and Steel Pulse, for the famine relief single ‘Land Of Africa’. His popularity continued throughout the 80s including a number of hits with Pants produced by Castro Brown and then into the 90s when he recorded with Dennis Brown and Beenie Man for the hit compilation Three Against War.
