Essential Albums
- With their stark single-note piano theme, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross found a sound that mirrors the roiling emotions lying just beyond the cerebral tensions of The Social Network. The percolating techno track “In Motion” conveys the programming obsessions and vertiginous success of a tech company, while the throbbing and abrasive “A Familiar Taste” channels underlying urges of greed, corruption, and selfishness. The duo’s unnerving balance of delicateness and animosity is best experienced on the frighteningly sleek interpretation of Wagner’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

About Trent Reznor
Trent Reznor juggles the roles of subversive outsider, larger-than-life rock star, and film composer with equal passion, intensity, and dusky beauty. Whether constructing walls of sound or tiptoeing around atmospheric minimalism, Reznor’s music fits as comfortably onscreen as it does onstage. With Nine Inch Nails, the brooding misfit funneled feelings of alienation and anguish into rough-hewn industrial rock that quickly amassed a global following. His diverse talents continued emerging through collaborations with artists like David Bowie and Marilyn Manson, while Reznor’s film scores redefined his musical career. Alongside longtime creative partner and NIN member Atticus Ross, his work on movies, documentaries, and video games succeeds in that it’s never just background music. He composes scenery that molds, dramatizes, and darkens the vision of writers and directors—most notably David Fincher, with whom he won an Oscar® for The Social Network soundtrack.
