To Hell With Burgundy

About To Hell With Burgundy

Despite its hook-laden, progressive rock sound, To Hell With Burgundy has yet to achieve the predicted success since the 1988 release of Groovy Goings On, an EP they shared with Red Moon Joe and Passionplay. Although the EP led to a record deal with Factory, the label went bankrupt shortly after the release of the trio's debut album, EarthBound, in May 1989. To Hell With Burgundy's struggles have only made them more committed to their music. They toured Europe as special guests of British folk-pop group Barclay James Harvest in 1990. They renewed their association with the band 11 years later when they opened shows for Barclay James Harvest Through the Eyes of John Lees, featuring original Barclay James Harvest members John Lees and Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme. To Hell With Burgundy has also opened shows for Graham Parker & the Rumour, Clannad, and Bob Geldof. Initially a duo featuring acoustic guitarist and vocalist Karl Walsh and vocalist/percussionist Joanne Hensman (who met when they were drama students), To Hell With Burgundy was expanded to a trio with the addition of guitarist and vocalist Kevin Metchear. Their name comes from a line in Rudolf Friml's operetta, The Vagabond King. Since the release of their second album, Only the World, in February 1992, the group has recorded for their own Stig - Europe label. ~ Craig Harris
