About Tkay Maidza

Since her birth in 1995, Takudzwa Victoria Rosa "Tkay" Maidza has been in a constant state of evolution. Even before she was a musician, the Zimbabwe-born, Australia-based singer/songwriter and rapper was on the move, shifting from a nascent tennis career to studying architecture to focusing on music. She broke through in 2013 with the exuberant electro-pop number “Brontosaurus” and quickly developed a reputation for innovative beats and a rapid flow. A string of buzzy singles and high-profile collaborations, including “DKLA” with Troye Sivan, led to her 2016 debut album, Tkay, which quickly climbed the Australian music charts. During what should have been a victory lap, Maidza once again shifted lanes, reintroducing herself to fans with a new sound and a bolder vision. With help from producer Dan Farber (Lizzo, Dizzee Rascal), Maidza’s follow-up album appeared as a trilogy of wide-ranging, super-charged EPs called Last Year Was Weird. Released between 2018 and 2021, the tracks zig and zag across genres, pairing Maidza’s nimble flow and razor-sharp lyricism with trap melodies (“Shook”), house beats (“24K”), and laconic pop (“Cashmere”). The trilogy shows her dexterity and highlights her ability to lean into change and embrace it, leaving fans eager to see what happens next.
