Essential Albums
- The Wiggles feel like they’ve always been a household name around the world, but it’s a success that’s been hard-won through countless TV appearances, live performances, mixed-media releases, and over 1400 songs ever since they formed in Sydney in 1991. Somewhat amazingly, this exhaustive collection of 40 tracks spanning 30 years of tireless activity manages to tell a complete story. Adapted from the video special of the same name, We’re All Fruit Salad!, charmingly, takes its title at large from its equally charming lead single—which happily likens the differences between people to the myriad fruits that make up a “yummy yummy” fruit salad. The Wiggles’ good-natured inclusivity underpins the simple joy of each track, and extends to We’re All Fruit Salads!’s own timeline too: The first third highlights the work of founding members Phillip Wilcher, Murray Cook, Greg Page, Jeff Fatt, and Anthony Field (the only remaining original Wiggle), introduced by the first song they ever wrote (“Get Ready To Wiggle”) and crowned by perennial favorite “Hot Potato.” The rest of the compilation charts the group’s “New Wiggles” era when the addition of Emma Watkins, Lachlan Gillespie, and Simon Pryce ushered in fresher, funkier sensibilities—starting with the curiously indefatigable “Wake Up Lachy!” and concluding on the 40th and final track: a rendition of “We’re All Fruit Salad!” that includes so many diverse guest musicians it borders on world music.

About The Wiggles
Children’s music has historically been the domain of dancing puppets and kindly, circle-time folksingers—that is, until The Wiggles came along in the early ‘90s to liven up the party. The band come by their rock ‘n’ roll energy honestly: Founding members Anthony Field and Jeff Fatt cut their teeth with ‘80s Aussie pub-rock favorites The Cockroaches, and their mates Murray Cook and Greg Page were products of the same scene. But their transition into an exuberant kid-friendly collective was precipitated by tragedy—after his infant niece died from SIDS, Field was inspired to combine his love of ’50s rhythm ‘n’ blues with his studies in early-childhood education. For The Wiggles, there wasn’t that much difference between playing for Teddy boys and singing about teddy bears. After all, vintage rock ‘n’ roll boasts the same sort of participatory calls to action as children’s music, and some of The Wiggles’ early standards (like the body-movin’ directive “Get Ready to Wiggle” and the food-themed sing-along “Hot Potato”) were actually child-proofed versions of Cockroaches songs. Thanks to their engaging live shows—which expanded to include color-coded uniforms, dancing, and animal mascots—and ceaseless stream of albums, The Wiggles gradually transitioned from being a DIY outfit playing Australian shopping malls to a multimedia juggernaut selling out arenas around the world. At this point, the brand is bigger than the players who built it: After his fellow original members hung up their headset mics, Field introduced a revamped lineup in 2013 to ensure future generations are schooled in the fine art of the wiggle.
