The Soul Agents were one of many R&B-based British mid-'60s groups that managed to put out a couple or so singles without making a commercial impact, though scattered tracks of theirs appear on numerous compilations of British Invasion rarities. Their first two singles had energetic and competent, but ultimately not too distinctive, covers of songs by Roy Orbison, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Mose Allison. They went in a slightly more pop direction while retaining their raw guitar/organ-based sound on their final 45, "Don't Break It Up," written by the British songwriting team of Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley (most famous for penning the Honeycombs' "Have I the Right"). Its B-side, the organ-powered instrumental "Gospel Train," was more indicative of the group's rhythm & blues roots. ~ Richie Unterberger
