- A revolution within a revolution, Music for the Jilted Generation kicked rave culture's smiley face upside down. While the British government cracked down on the anarchic party scene, The Prodigy doubled down on the chaos, speeding up hardcore's pummeling breakbeats and pianos and adding heavy-metal guitars to acid squelch. The result was a record as invigorating as any in electronic music—a hyperspeed journey through movie samples, minor-key hooks, and the sound of breaking glass. Dancing among the ruins never felt so good.
- The Prodigy’s debut will never not sound exhilarating and a little bit terrifying. A gateway LP for a generation, it helped soundtrack Britain's early ‘90s rave revolution and heralded UK dance music’s growing ambition. Suddenly, the genre no longer felt limited to gimmicky, flash-in-the-pan singles: Experience proved you could carefully weave monstrous hits into a cohesive album experience. And in Liam Howlett, the scene gained an impeccable figurehead: The classically trained pianist was young and commercially savvy without artistic compromise. His production here still feels audacious—almost contemptuous—and his music is loaded with menace as it pilots you to giddying highs (quite literally on “Out of Space”), then sends you crashing back to Earth.

About The Prodigy
The Prodigy navigated the high wire, balancing artistic merit and mainstream visibility with more flair than any electronica act of the 1990s. Ably defeating the image-unconscious attitude of most electronic artists in favor of a focus on nominal frontman Keith Flint, the group crossed over to the mainstream of pop music with an incendiary live experience that approximated the original atmosphere of the British rave scene even while leaning uncomfortably close to arena rock showmanship and punk theatrics. Even before the band took its place as the premiere dance act for the alternative masses, the Prodigy had proved a consistent entry in the British charts. ~ John Bush
