About Steven Keene

b. Brooklyn, New York, USA. Contemporary folk/blues artist Steven Keene began his travels under the guidance of his uncle Tex as part of a circus troupe operating in the southern regions of the USA. Learning to play guitar and harmonica, he eventually left the circus to take up more regular employment at a lumber mill in Austin, Texas. Spending his evenings playing on the local blues scene, he subsequently moved to Memphis to form his own band. After touring throughout the region, he left for New York’s Greenwich Village and solo performances in small folk clubs. Returning to a band format, he secured more lucrative gigs at venues such as the Lonestar Roadhouse and CBGB’s. The New York independent label Moo Records invited him to record a debut album at this time. No Alternative, released in 1996, consisted of songs whittled down from an original tally of 50 compositions. The musicians involved included Bob Dylan collaborators John Jackson, Tony Garrier and Bucky Baxter, as well as guitarist Danny Kalb from the Blues Project. It featured a mélange of folk, blues and rock songs, with declamatory titles such as ‘Far Better Friend Than Lover’ and Before You Save The World, Save Yourself’. Three obscure Dylan songs, ‘Never Say Goodbye’, ‘Walkin’ Down The Line’ and ‘Sign On The Window’, were also included.
