About Soul Brothers

Widely considered to be South Africa’s premier mbaqanga group, the Soul Brothers began as a Western pop covers band, before embracing their musical roots. The group utilizes numerous backing singers to provide distinctive harmonies, which are combined alongside mbaqanga rhythms with an innovative use of the Hammond organ. With this infectious sound--propelled by a visceral and visually dynamic live show--the group’s reputation spread throughout Africa and Europe. The group launched its own record label, Soul Brothers Records, in the late ‘80s, and after 1989’s excellent HLUPHEKILE, they switched to Peter Gabriel’s Earthworks for JUMP & JIVE (1994). The group's popularity soared during the 1990s and into the 2000s, and they remained prolific in accordance.
