About Sons Of Kemet

Led by saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Shabaka Hutchings, Sons of Kemet are a U.K.-based jazz group combining musicians from around the globe. Hutchings previously played in calypso and reggae bands in his native Barbados and studied at the Guildhall School of Music. After he found that he was equally comfortable playing free jazz and swing, he decided to give his music a Caribbean twist, and studied with ethnomusicologists back in Barbados. Sons of Kemet's debut release, Burn, arrived in 2013, and led to an MOBO award. Lest We Forget What We Came Here to Do was released to widespread critical acclaim in early 2016. The sociopolitical Your Queen Is a Reptile followed on Impulse! in 2018, and Black to the Future arrived in 2021.
