About Sonny Fortune
Sonny Fortune continues to grow. In the mid-'90s, he was in prime form. Fortune started his career playing in R&B groups in Philadelphia. He moved to New York in 1967 where he worked with Elvin Jones, Mongo Santamaria, and McCoy Tyner. After a stint with Buddy Rich, Fortune played quite effectively with Miles Davis (1974-1975). His solo albums during the '70s for Horizon and Atlantic were generally unsuccessful mixtures of advanced jazz with funk and pop elements. He did cut excellent dates for Konnex in the '80s and '90s. Fortune has continued to perform, and has released a steady stream of albums, including his 2000 tribute album In the Spirit of John Coltrane, 2003's Continuum, 2007's standards album You and the Night and the Music. ~ Scott Yanow
