Essential Albums
- It’s fair to say that Sara Evans’ country music career fully took off with the 2000 release of Born To Fly. Already a critic’s favorite, she secured a tighter hold on radio listeners with this well-realized song collection. Born To Fly reflects Evans’ search for a meeting-place between the old and new worlds of country most effectively on its title track, a bluegrass-rooted celebration of restless youth. A similar unbridled exuberance courses through tracks like “I Keep Lookin’,” “Let’s Dance” and “Every Little Kiss.” While the upbeat tunes are crucial to the album’s appeal, it’s the thoughtful midtempo numbers and bittersweet ballads that really prove Evans’ mettle as a song interpreter. “I Learned That From You” and “Saints And Angels” are soul-searching numbers that trace the peaks and valleys of real-life relationships. For those with a hankering for honky-tonk heartache, “You Don’t” more than fills the bill. Evans brings an authenticity and warmth to these songs that makes you forget she’s forging hit records in the process. That’s the beauty of Born To Fly.

About Sara Evans
Sara Evans is a country singer-songwriter who has bridged the genre’s neotraditionalist and pop eras across an enduring career filled with modern standards. ∙ Evans got her first gig at age 16 and spent two years as a nightclub singer in Columbia, Missouri, before moving to Nashville to pursue a career in music. ∙ The title of her 1997 debut album, Three Chords and the Truth, famously quotes country legend Harlan Howard, who helped Evans score a major-label deal after hearing her demos. ∙ Her second album, 1998’s Gold-certified No Place That Far, proved to be a major breakthrough, with its title track sending Evans to the top of the Country chart for the first time. ∙ Evans’ 2000 album, Born To Fly, went double Platinum, and its title track earned her a CMA Award for Video of the Year. ∙ She’s had three albums debut in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, and she’s hit No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart five times. ∙ Along with daughter Olivia and son Avery, she formed The Barker Family Band, whose 2019 self-titled debut EP included their cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic “Dreams.”
