Oswald von Wolkenstein

About Oswald von Wolkenstein

German composer Oswald von Wolkenstein (ca. 1377-1445) was a land owning nobleman and among the last composers of monophonic song dealing with the medieval subject of courtly love; he also wrote polyphonic music relatively late in life. Typified by his curious, one-eyed portrait, Oswald was involved in a land dispute with one of his neighbors and landed in jail numerous times. However, he composed love songs for one of his rival's daughters and at least one other woman apart from his wife. Many of Oswald's songs deal with firsthand life experiences and events; later pieces include simple, polyphonic pieces on sacred texts.
