About Official HIGE DANdism
Official HIGE DANdism bridges the gap between J-pop and rock, adding splashes of electronics to the band’s guitar- and drum-centered sound and penning lyrics that take unique angles on familiar topics such as love. The quartet—consisting of vocalist/keyboardist Satoshi Fujihara, guitarist Daisuke Ozasa, bassist Makoto Narazaki, and drummer Masaki Matsuura—initially came together in 2012. Meeting at Shimane University in Matsue City, they launched their career doing live shows, for which they mostly played popular rock covers. In 2015, they signed with indie label Lastrum Music Entertainment and moved to Tokyo to advance their career. Once in the capital, they hit on a more upbeat musical style and increasingly clever songwriting with early works such as “Sweet Tweet,” a funky tune celebrating the voice of a paramour. They also began incorporating more synthesizer melodies and drum machine beats into their work, offering an electronic boost to their songs as well as upping their emotional impact. The new additions coalesced on anthemic hits such as 2019’s “Pretender” about a new attraction and 2020’s “I Love…” about enjoying the better parts of an ultimately doomed relationship. Official HIGE DANdism have managed to merge many popular elements in contemporary Japanese music in their own songs, but they possess an eclectic sonic palette and fresh approach to lyricism that set them apart from their fellow J-pop chart-toppers.
