As an organist and composer Grigny added no new forms to this particular genre. He did, however, add a great deal of substance to the repertoire. His compositions for the organ demanded a great deal of the performer including virtuoso pedal techniques and the ability to play five part fugues. To accomplish this an organ needed two manuals as well as a rank of pedals and the player had to be able to adequately cover the instrument. Full use of the organ register was accomplished by Grigny to bring about a rich contrast in colors in the various parts in dialogues and fugues. In the works for organ Grigny employed fugal and dialogue techniques in his treatment of music outside of the context of these genres. Compositions by Grigny were rich, complex, intense and ornamented. In 1697 he was appointed as the organist for the Cathedral in Rheims. The volume of work he composed while in attendance at Rheims included nine groups of pieces -- mass movements and hymns. The Mass was built upon the foundation of a plainsong which he developed through a fugue. The remaining movements drop the fugue and take the traditional forms of duos, trios, and recitatives. ~ Keith Johnson
