About Neon Indian
The brainchild of mad synth scientist Alan Palomo, Neon Indian is an indie band from Denton, Texas that defined chillwave in the 2010s. Born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1988 and raised in San Antonio, Palomo began tinkering with synthesizers and music sampling in his college years on projects like Ghosthustler and VEGA. He melded retro, vaporwave-esque production with psychedelic synth-pop, even drawing inspiration from lo-fi recordings of his father, former pop star Jorge Palomo. Neon Indian released their trippy debut LP, Psychic Chasms, in 2009, injecting early favorites “Deadbeat Summer” and “Should Have Taken Acid with You” with warbling synthesizers and elastic basslines. Their 2011 follow-up, Era Extraña, was recorded in Finland and offered fans a smoother, more stylized sound, breaking through internationally with throbbing dance hit “Polish Girl.” Neon Indian reached new critical heights with 2015's VEGA INTL. Night School, as Palomo embraced hedonistic ‘80s pop on hit singles “Annie” and “Slumlord,” and leaned into groovier basslines, simpler drum beats, and conceptual storytelling. Palomo has since focused on filmmaking, appearing in Terrence Malick's 2017 film, Song to Song, while teasing fans with one-off singles like 2019's quirky, autobiographical synth jam “Toyota Man.”
